We bought some Steelcase Tanker desks 8 years ago for the office from a surplus store and quickly fell in love with them. The design and functionality was great. The main issue I had with it was the size. They are 28″ tall instead of the usual 30″ standard for a desk, and the leg / knee room in between the two drawer sections was tight. It could be that people were smaller in the 40s and 50s? Anyways, Steelcase stopped making Tanker desks a while ago, and recently others have discovered their coolness and they are harder to find.
So I’ve been wanting to make a more modern version of the Tanker Desk, and here it is. I opted to use the threaded rod our tables have to inject some industrial into it. It’s full of storage space too with 6 drawers, yet pretty minimalistic in design. The drawers are opened by pushing the face, and are soft close. And of course, these are made in America in our Phoenix shop.
This may be a customizable piece in the future, but now we’re most likely setting size and finish standards to keep costs down.
Hello, do you have any Super Tanker desks now? I am in Western North Carolina.
